Aerobic Septic System Parts
MECHANICAL PARTS OF AN AEROBIC SYSTEM
There are many different types of styles of Aerobic Treatment Units (ATUs) on the market today. While there are subtle differences between brands, all aerobic systems consist of these main components:
AERATION DEVICE / AERATOR
The aeration device is the primary component of an aerobic septic system. Every aerobic septic system regardless of brand has some type of air pump or aerator on the system. The air pump or aerator forces air into the tank to increase the levels of dissolved oxygen in the wastewater which allows aerobic bacteria to grow and thrive.
Septic Solutions carries all of the major brands and style of septic air pumps, as well as repair parts, rebuild kits, and components for all of these types of air pumps. Here are the main types of aeration devices:
SUBMERSIBLE EFFLUENT PUMP
If your aerobic system does not gravity flow into a drainage ditch or into a subsurface leach field, then you have a submersible effluent pump.
In the southern part of the United States, this pump is often used to pump to sprinklers in the yard or underground drip irrigation. This style of submersible pump is a high pressure output pump called a High Head Effluent Pump. If you do not have irrigation, then most likely you either have a standard Effluent Pump or no pump at all.
Submersible pumps usually are operated by a Float Switch which automatically turns the pump on or off based on the water level in the tank.
Systems with spray irrigation will use purple top Sprinkler Heads designed for non-potable water applications.
CHLORINE DISINFECTION
Most aerobic systems that discharge somewhere on the surface (to a drainage ditch, through sprinklers or drip irrigation, etc) will have a chlorine disinfection device. The chlorinator is designed to dose chlorine into the discharge water which disinfects and kills any remaining bacteria in the effluent prior to it being discharged on the surface.
The most common version of this is a Chlorine Tablet Feeder which is designed to use specialized Chlorine Disinfecting Tablets for septic systems.
AEROBIC SYSTEM CONTROL PANEL
The Aerobic System Control Panel is designed to control and monitor the functions of the aerobic treatment system. These usually have an alarm to indicate problems with the system such as air pump failure or high water level due to a submersible pump failure. Some aerobic control panels may even have a timer that controls when the submersible pump or aerator can run.
