CHOOSING THE CORRECT HIBLOW AIR PUMP
As you can see from the options above, there are many different sizes of Hiblow air pumps to choose from. Below is further information that breaks down the difference between all of the Hiblow models that are available.
HIBLOW HP VS XP SERIES
The Hiblow HP series has long been considered the best linear pump available on the market. Since 2002, the HP series has led the industry in product reliability. The HP series continues to be the workhorse of the Hiblow product line. If you are looking for the longest lasting diaphragm pump on the market, the HP series is the choice for you.
The Hiblow XP series linear diaphragm air pumps are considered to be an "economy" product line from the world's largest producer of linear air pumps. While the Hiblow HP series continues to exceed the industry standard for life expectancy and build quality, the XP series is available to consumers with a more efficient operating cost at an affordable lower price point.
If you are looking for the best available pump your money can buy, Septic Solutions will always recommend the HP Series from Hiblow. The HP series continues to be the best when it comes to life expectancy, build quality, and warranty length. However, if your needs require something more economical, the Hiblow XP series is the best option.
AIR FLOW VOLUME (LPM, CFM)
The most significant difference between the available Hiblow models is the air flow volume. This can be given in units of either cubic feet of air per minute (cfm) or liters of air per minute (LPM).
The air flow volume of an particular model also depends on the operating pressure (p.s.i). On our website we give the CFM in terms of "open flow". This would be a maximum airflow rating with the air pump running at 0 p.s.i. As the pressure increases the air flow volume will decrease. T
he LPM metric that we give on our website is the volume of air at the pump's rated pressure. For the Hiblow HP-80 unit for instance, the maximum airflow is 4.2 cfm (119 LPM) operating at 0 p.s.i., and the rated air flow is 80 LPM (2.83 cfm) operating at the rated pressure of 2.13 p.s.i.
OPERATING PRESSURE
As mentioned above, as the operating pressure of an air pump increases the air flow volume decreases. Generally when installed on an aerobic treatment septic system, the Hiblow air pumps will operate at between 2-3 psi. If the Hiblow air pump is being used for pond aeration, it will depend a lot on the depth of water. It takes 0.43 p.s.i. to overcome 1 ft of water.
All of the Hiblow pumps have a maximum continuous operating pressure rating. This is the maximum pressure that the pump can run at continuously in an application without causing damage to the unit.
THE RIGHT PUMP FOR YOU
By determining the amount of airflow volume needed (cfm, LPM) and figuring out the operating pressure (p.s.i.) of the application, you can use the flow curves provided on the product pages to determine which Hiblow model will be best to provide the correct amount of air flow for your application.
Aerobic Treatment Systems (ATUs) are tested an approved with different sizes of air pumps based upon the treatment volume and tank design. Most residential ATU systems are rated to treat 500 Gallons Per Day (GPD) but can use a variety of pump sizes anywhere between the HP-40 and HP-100.

WHY CHOOSE HIBLOW SEPTIC AIR PUMPS?
Hiblow air pumps are the industry benchmark for aerobic septic systems, offering unmatched performance and reliability. Key benefits include:
- Exceptional Durability: Linear diaphragm design with EPDM rubber diaphragms lasts 3–6 years (up to 5 years for LL models), with pumps often exceeding 10–12 years with rebuilds.
- Quiet Operation: Noise levels as low as 36 dBA in test chambers, ensuring minimal disturbance in residential settings.
- Energy Efficient: Low power consumption (e.g., 71 W for HP-80) reduces operating costs for continuous 24/7 aeration.
- Weatherproof Design: UL-rated for outdoor use without an enclosure, though a vented air pump housing is recommended to protect against debris and heat.
- Rebuildable: Affordable rebuild kits allow easy maintenance every 3–6 years, extending pump life at a fraction of replacement cost.
- Versatile Models: HP series for premium performance, XP series for budget-friendly efficiency, plus dual-port and alarm-equipped options for specialized systems.
- Trusted Brand: Hiblow, a subsidiary of Techno Takatsuki, has been a global leader in linear diaphragm pumps for nearly 100 years, producing over 12 million units.
MAINTENANCE TIPS
- Clean/replace air filters every 6–12 months.
- Rebuild every 3–6 years using Hiblow OEM Genuine Factory Certified rebuild kits. Avoid knock-off kits from Amazon/eBay, as they can damage the pump.
- Check diffusers annually for clogs to reduce backpressure.
