SUBMERSIBLE EFFLUENT PUMPS FOR SEPTIC TANKS
Submersible effluent pumps are engineered to handle grey water or treated wastewater after solids have settled in a septic tank or aerobic system. These pumps feature a 1-1/2" or 2" discharge and can manage small particles up to 3/4" in diameter. They are ideal for applications such as:
- Effluent Pumping: Transferring treated effluent from septic tanks to drain fields
- Mound Systems: Supporting elevated drain fields for effective wastewater dispersal
- Liquid Waste Transfer: Moving wastewater in residential or commercial settings
- High-Head Dewatering: Handling high-pressure discharge needs
HOW A SEPTIC TANK PUMP WORKS
A submersible effluent pump is usually installed in the second compartment of a septic tank, or ideally in its own separate effluent pumping chamber after the septic tank or aerobic system. As effluent accumulates in the pumping chamber, the float switch automatically activates the pump when the liquid reaches a certain level. The submersible pump then moves the effluent through a discharge pipe to the designated disposal area, such as a leach field. Once the liquid level drops, the float switch automatically turns the pump off.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT SEPTIC TANK PUMP
Choosing the correct submersible pump for your septic tank involves evaluating several key factors to ensure compatibility, longevity, and efficiency. Below is a concise guide to help you select the correct submersible effluent pump:
- UNDERSTAND YOUR APPLICATION
Effluent pumps transfer treated wastewater from a septic tank or aerobic treatment system to a drain field, mound system, or other discharge point. They handle small particles (up to 3/4" in diameter) but are not designed for raw sewage with larger solids.
- DETERMINE PUMP PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
Flow Rate (GPM): Calculate the gallons per minute (GPM) your system needs. For example: Residential systems typically require 10–70 GPM, depending on household size and wastewater volume. Check your septic system’s design specifications or consult a professional.
Total Dynamic Head (TDH): Measure the vertical lift (from pump to the highest point in the discharge line) then add in friction losses from the horizontal distance of pipes. Total Dynamic Head determines the pump’s ability to push water. If you have questions on calculating your Total Dynamic Head, reach out to our sales team for assistance!
Pump Curve: Review the pump’s performance curve to match GPM and TDH requirements.
